• The First Scientific Research Strategy Seminar of Eastern Institute for Advanced Study Held Successfully in Ningbo

    On 12th and 13th of October 2022, the First Scientific Research Strategy Seminar of Eastern Institute for Advanced Study was successfully held at Eastern Institute for Advanced Study (EIAS). Chen Shiyi (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor of EIAS/SUSTech) delivered a speech. Meng Qingguo (Deputy Director of the Department of Mathematics and Physics of National Natural Science Foundation of China), Ren Jiarong (Director of Materials Division of the High-tech Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology), Chen Yong (Head of Development Planning and Resource Allocation Management Division of Zhejiang Science and Technology Department) and Chen Qianghong (Director of High-tech and Industrialization Department of Ningbo Science and Technology Bureau) were invited to attend the seminar and give their keynote speeches. Luo Xisheng (Vice President of University of Science and Technology of China), Yang Guilin (Deputy Director of Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering of Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Qiu Min (Vice President of Westlake University) were invited to attend the seminar and gave their keynote speeches. The leading group, teaching and research staff, heads of departments and related functional units of EIAS attended the seminar.

     

    The Academician Chen Shiyi pointed out that, with the new opportunities and challenges, Eastern Institute for Advanced Study (tentative name), as a high-level, innovative and new international research-based university under construction, needed to think about how to gain an upper hand in the world’s scientific and technological frontier in terms of the development layout of scientific and technological innovation strategy, how to build a high-level scientific research platform based on the national strategic and academic frontier, produce high-level scientific and technological innovation achievements, support the high-quality development of the economy and society, and serve the national high-level scientific and technological self-reliance.

     

    The seminar was composed of keynote speeches, onsite communication, and topic discussion. The keynote speeches included introduction to scientific research funding system, sharing of experience in scientific research and development of peer colleges and universities, and sharing of experience of excellent homecoming professors. The experts introduced the municipal, provincial and national research funding systems to the teaching and research staff of EIAS, scientific research and development of local colleges, universities and research institutions, and development and experience after returning to China. The personal experiences of Professor Guo Shaojun from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Peking University, Professor Lu Haizhou from the Department of Physics of SUSTech, and Associate Professor Lu Jiwen from Tsinghua University greatly inspired and encouraged the teaching and research staff of EIAS. In the topic discussion session, the leaders, experts and professors had active discussions, and proposed constructive opinions and suggestions for the development of EIAS to unify ideas, build consensus and add a resultant force for building EIAS into a world-class university.

     

    It was learned that this was the first time for EIAS to hold a seminar on scientific research strategy, and it was also an important measure for EIAS to build a high-level, innovative and new international research-based university and serve the national and regional economic and social development. As of October 12, 2022, EIAS signed contracts with a total of 30 full-time high-level faculties including 3 academicians, 10 fellows from international academic institutions and 8 national-level talents, 1 talent listed in the KP of Zhejiang Province and 1 talent listed in the leading Project of Ningbo. EIAS vigorously promoted the construction of high-level science and technology innovation platform and built a high-performance computing platform.
