Shanghai Jiao Tong University, founded in 1896, is one of the most famous institutions of higher education in China with the longest history and a good reputation at home and abroad. It is a national key university which is directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and jointly established with Shanghai. It has established a complete postgraduate education and degree awarding system and possessed a high-quality academic team and a high-level discipline platform. At present, postgraduate students are enrolled and trained in 11 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management and art. Adhering to the fine tradition of “high starting point, solid foundation, strict requirements, emphasis on practice and innovation”, Shanghai Jiao Tong University will be built into a “comprehensive, innovative and international” world-class university.

Eastern Institute for Advanced Study (EIAS) is the construction preparation organization of Eastern Institute of Technology (Tentative). Eastern Institute of Technology is a new research-based university under active construction. It is invested by Yu Renrong Education Foundation and supported by Zhejiang Provincial Government and Ningbo Municipal Government. It aims to be “high-level, innovative and international” and to build a teaching staff, management team, teaching and scientific research environment according to the world-class standards. It plans to establish four discipline groups of science, engineering, information and business as well as characteristic humanity and society discipline, emphasizing the simultaneous development of basic research and applied research, highlighting the cross-integration of disciplines, devoting itself to building a talent training system with international standards and characteristics of Eastern Institute of Technology, and training top-notch innovative talents with “solid foundation, innovative ability, deep concern for the family and the country, and international vision”.

In 2023, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Eastern Institute for Advanced Study will implement the joint PhD program in order to train top-notch and innovative talents in science and technology.

1. Enrollment scale and academic system

About 25 students will be enrolled in the program, and the enrollment quota of each tutor is 1-2 student(s). There are three selection modes, namely “Direct-Entry PhD Program (post bachelor's)”, “MBA-DBA” and “Application-assessment System”. Admit the best examinee enroll only those who are outstanding.

The length of the joint PhD program  is 4 or 5 years, the admission category is non-directional employment, and the study mode is full-time.

Application conditions

1. You should be a citizen of the People’s Republic of China, support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, have good moral character and abide by the law.

5. You should get ≥425 points in CET-6, ≥ 90 points in new TOEFL or ≥ 6.0 in IELTS. Or you participated in a degree program in English and obtained a degree, or you majored in English and obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree in English. Those who do not meet the foreign language proficiency requirements stipulated by the school and college will take part in the English proficiency assessment by the college in the comprehensive assessment stage.

Please visit the official website of Postgraduate Admission of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and click the “Candidate Login--PhD Student Login” page in “Management Information System Login” for making an application. For a special item plan, please “Joint PhD Program of Eastern Institute for Advanced Study”. You can select the tutor from “Tutors” in the above form.

Application time: October 15-December 15, 2022; March 15-April 20, 2023. Please refer to the notice for applying for the college for application deadline, and prepare the application materials according to the requirements of the college. The application fee (RMB 250) is paid upon online application. Once the application information is confirmed, the application fee will not be refunded.

(2) Copies of master’s degree, degree certificate and degree certification report (You need to login http://www.chinadegrees.cn to enter “Degree Search” to apply for degree verification online, print and download your degree certification report. You should submit the copy of overseas degree certificate and the copies “Certificates of Academic Degree and Diploma” to the Overseas Study Service Center of the Ministry of Education.)

(3) The original transcript of the postgraduate courses (the copy should be stamped with the official score seal of the postgraduate management department or the official seal of the candidate archives management department)

(4) Copy of the second-generation ID card, and the copy of front and back of the ID card on the same side of the A4 paper

(5) Copies of award certificates

(6) Copies of scientific research achievements (including patents obtained) and published academic papers or monographs during study or work (copies of journal cover + catalogue + texts + back cover for academic papers, and copies of cover, preface (or foreword) and postscript for monographs)

You should carefully check whether you meet the application conditions, and make sure that the submitted materials are true and accurate. If you provide false information, you will be disqualified from secondary examination, enrollment or admission.

After you submit the application materials, the college will arrange an expert group to conduct preliminary qualification examination on your applicant materials, and inform you of participating in the comprehensive assessment and secondary examination.

2. 2.Assessment mode

Comprehensive assessment generally includes the following three parts:

(1) Professional test: The full mark is 100. It mainly assesses your professional foundation and knowledge structure.

(2) Comprehensive interview: The full mark is 100. It mainly assesses your foreign language proficiency, professional ability, academic ambition, innovative thinking, research potential, etc.

(3) Evaluation of the tutor group: The full mark is 100. The tutor group judges your professional level, scientific research ability and academic potential.

If the assessment is not qualified (the score of any of professional test, comprehensive interview and evaluation of tutor group is less than 60), you will not be admitted.

In the assessment stage, your ideological and political quality and moral trait will be assessed, including political attitude, ideological performance, learning (work) attitude, moral trait and law-abiding performance.

3. 3. Physical examination

After entering the university, the school will arrange physical examination, and the physical examination standards are implemented according to relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education and the university.

Proposed admission procedures

The college will review your assessment result and records and combine special enrollment plan, ideological and political performance, professional quality and physical health to determine whether you meet the admission conditions. The leading group of college enrollment determines the list of candidates to be admitted, and submits it to the leading group of university enrollment for approval before admission.

Your integrity will be regarded as an important content of ideological and moral assessment and an important basis for your admission. If you fail to pass the ideological and moral assessment, you will not be admitted. If you violate the rules or practice fraud in your application or assessment, you will be punished according to Measures for the Punishment of Regulatory Violations in State Education Examinations and relevant provisions. If you are a full-time student, your violation will be notified to your school, and your school,will give a punishment to you according to relevant regulations. If the case is serious, you will be expulsed from academic status. If you are an on-the-job student, your violation will be notified to your unit, and your unit will give you the party or political disciplinary punishment according to the situation. If a crime is constituted, you will be prosecuted for criminal liability by the judiciary organ according to law.

If you are a new student and fail to register for enrollment in time, you should have proper reasons and relevant certificates and ask for leave from relevant department of the college. If fail to register for enrollment for over two weeks without any reason, you will be disqualified from admission.

In order to stimulate the scientific research and innovation of Phd students, Eastern Institute for Advanced Study provides living subsidy and research assistantship allowance for the doctoral students under joint PhD Program.

3. 3. Training mode

The PhD students under joint PhD Program  to register their status at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and they are trained by both parties and guided by dual tutors. In the first year, they study the courses at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since the second year, they are mainly engaged in scientific research related to the academic dissertations in Eastern Institute for Advanced Study. If the students under joint PhD Program meet the graduation conditions of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, they will be awarded the graduation certificate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. If the students meet the requirements of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on doctoral degree, they will be granted with the doctoral degree of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
