After the development for 85 years, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has become the global top university by virtue of its world-class scientific research and education. In the QS World University Rankings 2023, PolyU ranked as 65^th in the world and ranked as 26^th in the QS Asian University Rankings 2023. PolyU possesses many key disciplines, among which Hospitality and Tourism Management ranked as 1^st in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) (the first in Hong Kong), Civil Engineering ranked as 4^th in the ARWU (the first in Hong Kong). Management ranked as 4^th in the ARWU (the first in Hong Kong), Transportation Science & Technology ranked as 5^th in the ARWU (the first in Hong Kong), and Art and Design QS ranked as 16^th in the ARWU (the first in Hong Kong). PolyU possesses a strong academic team, among whom many professors/lecturers are international authoritative experts in the relevant research fields and can provide internationally competitive teaching and research guidance. It has first-class scientific research facilities including three joint laboratories of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, two state key laboratories, and two Hong Kong sub-centers of national engineering technology research centers.

Eastern Institute for Advanced Study (tentative name) is a new research-based university which is set with starting point and positioning and is under active construction. Eastern Institute for Advanced Study (EIAS) is during the construction period. Eastern Institute for Advanced Study is invested by Yu Renrong Education Foundation and supported by Zhejiang Provincial Government and Ningbo Municipal Government. It aims to be “high-level, innovative and international” and to build a teaching staff, management team, teaching and scientific research environment according to the world-class standards. It plans to establish four discipline groups of science, engineering, information and business as well as characteristic humanity and society discipline, emphasizing the simultaneous development of basic research and applied research, highlighting the cross-integration of disciplines, devoting itself to building a talent training system with international standards and characteristics of Eastern Institute for Advanced Study, and training top-notch innovative talents with “solid foundation, innovative ability, deep concern for the family and the country, and international vision”

In order to train top-notch and innovative talents in science and technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Eastern Institute for Advanced Study haveJoint PhD program signed the Joint PhD Program agreement since 2022. The PhD students under Joint PhD Program are trained by both parties and guided by dual tutors. After completing the learning requirements stipulated in the Joint PhD program and passing the dissertation defense, they will be awarded the PhD degree certificates issued by Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the academic completion certificate issued by Eastern Institute for Advanced Study.

The enrollment fields of this program in 2023 are as follows:

Science: Mathematics, physics, chemistry, life science

Engineering (excluding information science and technology): Mechanical engineering, mechanics and aerospace engineering, materials science and engineering, biomedical engineering, energy science and engineering, chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering

Information science and technology Electronic science and technology, computer science and technology, automation, information and communication engineering

1. Academic system and enrollment scale

The length of the  Joint PhD Program is 4 years, including the first and second years for studying at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the third and fourth years for studying at Eastern Institute for Advanced Study. The enrollment quota in 2023 will be less than 25.

Application conditions

1. You should support the leadership of the Communist Party of China, love the motherland, abide by the law, and have good conduct.
2. You are a fresh or previous graduate with bachelor or master’s degree which is recognized by the state. If you obtain a degree certificate outside the country (territory), you should submit Certificates of Academic Degree and Diploma in Foreign Country (Territory) issued by the Overseas Study Service Center of the Ministry of Education.
3. You should have a keen academic research, and have a strong sense of innovation, innovation ability and professional ability.
4. You should be physically and mentally healthy and meet the physical examination requirements stipulated by the state and the university.
5. You should meet the following English requirements before admission: IELTS ≥ 6.5, TOEFL ≥ 80 (online test) or 550 (paper test)
6. The GPA of the undergraduate applicant is generally 85 or above during study at the university.

4. 1st round screening: Eastern Institute for Advanced Study conducts qualification examination and primary selection according to the application materials, and the result will be notified to you. If you fail tin this round , you will not be notified.

2. Scholarship and grants

During the two-year study in Hong Kong, the PhD students under joint PhD Program  will be entitled of the same amount of scholarship and grants as the PhD students of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

During your study at EIAS, EIAS will provide you with competitive scholarship and grants according to relevant national regulations so that you can concentrate on your study and research.

2. Tuition Fee

During the study at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the PhD students under Joint PhD program will bear registration fee, tuition fee, accommodation fee, visa, international travel expense and other expenses.

During the study at Eastern Institute for Advanced Study, the PhD  students under Joint PhD program should pay accommodation fee and other related expenses according to the charging standard of Eastern Institute for Advanced Study.

3. About dual tutors

You can learn more about the tutors through official website of Eastern Institute for Advanced Study. As the team of tutors of EIAS is expanding, you can contact the Admission Office of Eastern Institute for Advanced Study for more information. You need to choose your field, and choose your tutor. If you do not choose a tutor, EIAS will determine the tutor according to your research plan and interest.

Every tutor of EIAS has a cooperative tutor for the corresponding discipline of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the tutors of both sides will jointly guide the PhD students.

4. You shall ensure the authenticity of the uploaded application materials and the information filled in the system. Whenever it is verified that there is any untrue content, the registration and admission qualification will be cancelled at your own risk.
